... because everyone has a poet within, especially when engaging with children's poetry. Creative writing for kids can unlock this hidden talent, and poetry workshops can nurture it further.

Attend a Live Poetry Workshop for Kids:

Aug 7, 2025 9:45 AM - 10:45 AM

Calling all kids! Join us for a fun-filled session of children poetry writing! We’re thrilled to welcome educator and author Valerie Rivera to host a creative writing workshop tailored for our young readers.

If you have a child (typically age 6+; must be able to read and write), come on by and let them experience the joy of poetry for kids as they create their own unique poems.

On August 7th, while the kids are arriving and settling in, Valerie will read from her delightful book, "I Am Puppy" (also available in Spanish). Then, she’ll guide the group through an exciting process to craft simple, original handwritten poems by:

- examining forms of poetry,

- having fun finding themes,

- reading model poems,

- discussing patterns,

- spending time writing, and

- sharing/listening to shared poems.

Be prepared to welcome home a budding poet!

Materials needed: attendees should bring only a pencil/pen and a small notebook for writing. (Note: We offer these for sale at 10% off for workshop participants.)

Cost and schedule: August 7 at 9:45 AM.

Each workshop costs $4/child, $1/grown-up, and $1 for each additional child in the family.

Not sure yet? Valerie will provide a free Japanese writing pen to each attendee. Plus, she’ll conduct a raffle drawing for a free Kids Read and Write Japanese Poetry book.

Advance registration is required for planning purposes. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you in the bookstore!
